Once upon a time, there was a blog.
Starting off as a way to document the great adventure that was our cross-country relocation from the east coast to the unpopulated corner of Washington State, this evolved into my near daily commentary on life in the not-big not-city. These days one can find here:
- Excerpts from my writing, which includes memoir, humor, and speculative fiction.
- Self-deprecating humor regarding the absurd circumstances I encounter on a regular basis.
- Commentary about the state of affairs in the LGBt community
- Insights, however ridiculous, about the thriving metropolis that is Walla Walla, Washington.
- Travel and food writing documenting the strange, exciting, and quirky places we experience.
To be sure, if I find Eva Gabor out here singing about green acres, I promise I’ll take a picture.
I’ve guest blogged for Bitch magazine several times on politics and popular culture. I also wrote a weekly feature on LGBT YA writing at GayYA.org. I contributed to a blog about consuming popular culture, called I Fry Mine in Butter. And I regularly contribute to Amwriting.org with short fiction and articles on the business of writing.
I created a blog for my memoir, Bumbling into Body Hair: The Story of an Accident-Prone Transsexual, published in March 2012 by Booktrope Editions. It’s my brand of hilarious. Bumbling was a finalist in the 2010 Pacific Northwest Writer’s Association Literary Contest for memoir. I also have a short story, “Cursed,” in the anthology, The Collection: Short Fiction from the Transsexual Vanguard, published by Topside Press (October 16, 2012).
I was a Lambda Literary Foundation Fellow in their 2013 Emerging Voices Workshop, working in the fiction cohort with Samuel Delany.
I have a short story, Underwater, published in the inaugural issue of SPLIT Quarterly. Make sure you stop by and read the issue! You will find a short horror story by me, Night Rounds, in the February 2011 issue of Twisted Dreams. For a magical realism story, check out Angst & Metamorphosis on the amwriting.org blog. And for some food writing of mine, check out issue #6 of Remedy Quarterly.
For more of me online, you can find me on Twitter as @EverettMaroon, and over on Facebook. I always appreciate comments, feedback, and links from people!
I’ve been reading your posts on I Fry Mine in Butter for a few weeks, and just discovered that you, too, live in Walla Walla! I moved here about a year ago from Boston. I’m looking forward to reading more of your insights and musings about this funny, funny little town. 🙂
Wonderful! Well, I hope you have fun reading up on little Wallyworld. I’ve been told it takes about two years to really adjust. But there are several good things about the place. Enjoy the summer there!
Are you coming back, or were you just temporary Whitman visitors last year? I met so many visiting professors (I’m a librarian at Whitman) and now they are all gone or leaving soon. So sad.
We’re coming back to Wallyworld next spring; we’ll be elsewhere until January. About a month ago I posted our travel itinerary, so it’s up here on the blog.
Do you really live in Walla Walla? I came here from Seattle in February. It’s been quite the adjustment.
Sure, I really live here! I started this blog to write about the adjustment! The earliest posts in the archives here talk a lot about my observations of walla walla life. Or you can check out the walla walla tag. I hope you’ve found the patisserie on colville street.
I spent the last 7 minutes looking for a “Contact” page – but I guess leaving a comment is the only way to contact you.
As someone who just moved to Walla Walla, reading your older posts about the town has been amusing (especially the zombie one https://transplantportation.com/2011/10/19/when-zombies-attack-walla-walla/)
Keep up the interesting writing.
Thanks! Also, you’ll find a link to my email at the very bottom of the site. Maybe I should put up a proper contact page. Enjoy Walla Walla! It’s an odd little outpost, but it’s got its charm.
